Guarnaschelli was born to Maria Guarnaschelli. She was the daughter of John Guarnaschelli. Barnard College awarded her a master's degree in art history in 1991. The year she graduated, she worked an hourly wage at a place called the American Place for one year. Guarnaschelli's love for cooking began when watching her mom test a variety of recipes in her kitchen while editing books. Guarnaschelli's career began in the kitchen of Larry Forgione. Her son Marc Forgione was the Iron Chef. Guarnaschelli continued to work at various restaurants throughout France as well as Los Angeles. Guy Savoy owns La Butte Chaillot. Also, she worked at Daniel Boulud's own restaurant, as well as Joachim Splichal's Patina prior to becoming executive chef at Butter. In the years before its demise it was her job to be the executive chef of The Darby. She chaired the Food Museum's Culinary Council. Guarnaschelli released her first cookbook in the year 2013. "Old school comfort food: How I Learned how to Cook" combines autobiographical details and the recipes she loves from her books she's modified to her home.
